shapeshifting, pious, and violent
repressive nervous system of government

the guests of honor are in black sunday best
a (searing) scream cuts through the midnight air

and my lungs
are overcome
with the sick scent of sulfur
this machine
needs fuel to breathe
in this age of steel

shrapnel blast, baptismal tear gas
concussion, flash, symphonic bombast
a half mast burning flag
and a hail of gasoline soaked rags

under fire the spectacle attacks
and the only sacrifice it asks

to be snuffed out like a cigarette spent
